Since Tyler Heagney was young, his parents always kept him in an active environment growing up in Phoenix playing baseball and football all the way through high school.
Tyler moved to Indiana for college and graduated in 2012 from Valparaiso University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He accepted a position at Yuma Proving Ground and relocated in November 2012.
After college, he wanted to get back to being active and get his fitness back on track. Tyler started playing softball and lifting weights at a traditional style gym, but wasn’t getting that “edge” he was craving. At this point, Tyler was invited to a CrossFit gym in October 2014 and started his journey after seeing first-hand the competitive, fun, and encouraging environment the CrossFit community offered.
By December 2015, Tyler had joined the Instructor Training Program and in June 2016, became a CrossFit Level 1 trainer. Tyler’s favorite part about coaching is seeing athletes wide eyed after achieving a new skill or getting a movement down.
Recently (December 2016), Tyler was awarded 1st place in the Yuma Throwdown (a local CrossFit competition). His competitive nature and the competitive opportunities of CrossFit along with the fulfillment he gets from coaching is what keeps him coming back day after day.
When asked what he does for fun, Tyler replied with, “Eat” and claims Italian to be his favorite. He also enjoys Rock or Country music and when he had extra free time (before he started coaching at Na Koa) he enjoyed playing the guitar.
